Dynamic in situ electron microscopy as a tool to meet the challenges of the nanoworld Dynamic in situ electron microscopy as a tool to meet the challenges of the nanoworld Front page picture is nanoscale map of the world drawn using electron beam induced deposition (EBID) with W based precursor on silicon nitride substrate (Courtesy P.A. Dynamic in situ electron microscopy as a tool to meet the challenges of the nanoworld We are now in an era where the scale of materials structures required for technology is shrinking at a fast pace. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and related techniques are primary characterization tools for this nanoworld. Recent developments in instrument design and auxiliary equipment have made it possible to synthesize, characterize and measure properties of active materials at the nanoscale, in situ, using TEM. Various in situ and operandi † techniques have emerged in recent years and are assuming greater importance in different areas of science and engineering. In this report, we use the term 'in situ TEM' to apply to experiments where some form of stimulus is applied to a sample while it is observed in a TEM. The main objective of this workshop was to identify current and future research programs where in situ observation of dynamic processes can lead to greater understanding and control of nanomaterials synthesis and properties. was attended by 40 national and international scientists from academia, national laboratories and industry. Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows also participated. The workshop provided a venue for direct interaction between researchers with expertise in diverse fields who use in situ TEM techniques to study synthesis processes, structure, properties and real-time evolution of nanomaterials. Workshop activities included scientific presentations, focused discussion groups, general discussion and report generation. The range of topics that was covered highlighted the capability of electron microscopy to probe the fundamentals of synthesis, structure and responsive chemical and physical properties of materials at the nanoscale by in situ dynamic observations. This workshop report is also available at the website: The main objectives of this workshop were to: 1. Share recent developments of in situ electron microscopy techniques and their applications to understand the behavior and properties of nanostructured systems such as catalysts, quantum dots, nanowires etc. 2. Identify high impact research topics that can be advanced by in situ techniques over …

Ex-situ studies on calcinations of structural, optical and morphological properties of post-growth nanoparticles CeO2 by HRTEM and SAED

Nanocrystalline particles of Cerium Oxide (CeO2) have been prepared by the chemical precipitation method using Cerium nitrate and Urea with a molar ratio of 1:2. The results revealed that the formation of CeO2 fine particles is influenced by molar ratio of metal nitrates to fuel. Well faceted CeO2 nanoparticles, were synthesized by thermal-assisted dissociation ...
